Adulting is a Scam... But Here’s How to Cope

Nobody warned us that “being grown” would feel like getting billed just for existing. You graduate, get your first payslip, and suddenly rent, electricity tokens and everyone's expectations arrive at once.

If you feel tired, behind or quietly overwhelmed, you're not failing. You're adulting. Here is how to cope without losing yourself.

Admit that it's hard

Social media shows everyone's highlights: the promotion, the new flat, the holiday in Diani. It never shows the overdraft, the arguments or the nights spent worrying. Comparing your behind-the-scenes to someone else's highlight reel will always make you feel behind. Most people are figuring it out as they go.

Take control of your money, gently

  • Make a simple budget. Needs first (rent, food, transport), then savings, then wants. Even a note on your phone counts.
  • Plan for family support. Helping family is part of our culture, but decide on an amount you can give each month so it doesn't sink you.
  • Build a small cushion. A few thousand shillings put aside turns emergencies into inconveniences.
  • Learn to say “not this month.” You are allowed to skip the outing, the contribution or the upgrade.

Protect your energy

  • Sleep like it matters. It does. Everything feels harder on four hours of sleep.
  • Move your body. A 20-minute walk after work does more for your mood than another hour of scrolling.
  • Set boundaries. Work stops at a set time. Not every message needs an instant reply.
  • Keep something just for you. A hobby, a church group, a football team, a Sunday cook-up: something that isn't about earning or pleasing anyone.

Talk about it

Carrying everything alone is what turns stress into burnout. Talk to a friend who gets it, a mentor, a sibling or a counsellor. Many workplaces and churches offer free support, and speaking to a professional is a sign of strength, not weakness.

You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to keep showing up for yourself.

Celebrate the small wins

Paid rent on time? Win. Cooked instead of ordering? Win. Said no to something that would have drained you? Big win. Adulting is mostly small, unglamorous victories. Notice them, and give yourself some credit. You're doing better than you think.

Stay silent at all cost!

✅ Be silent if you don't know the full story. ✅ Be silent if you feel unable to control your emotions. Silence isn't weakness. Often it is the strongest thing in the room.
