YOU LOOK FINE, BUT ARE REALLY OKAY!

You look fine, but are you really okay? We live in a world where appearances are everything: perfect photos, busy schedules and a smile that hides how we really feel inside.

Many of us grew up hearing “you'll be fine”, “just pray about it” or “others have it worse”. These words are usually meant kindly, but they can teach us to hide what we feel. Mental health is health. It deserves the same attention as a fever or a broken arm.

Signs that someone may not be okay

  • Pulling away from friends, family or activities they used to enjoy.
  • Changes in sleep or appetite: sleeping much more or much less, eating very differently.
  • Constant tiredness, even after rest.
  • Irritability or mood swings that seem out of character.
  • Talking about feeling hopeless, trapped or like a burden.
  • Relying more on alcohol or other substances to get through the day.

These signs can show up in you, too. Be as honest with yourself as you would be with a friend.

How to check in on someone

  • Ask twice. “How are you?” gets “I'm fine.” “No, really, how are you doing?” opens the door.
  • Listen more than you talk. You don't need the right words or a solution. Being heard is powerful on its own.
  • Don't judge or compare. Avoid “it's not that bad” or “at least…”. Their feelings are real to them.
  • Stay in touch. A message a few days later shows you meant it.
  • Encourage professional help if things seem serious, and offer to help find it.

Taking care of yourself

  • Name what you feel. Stressed, sad, anxious, lonely: naming it is the first step to handling it.
  • Keep the basics going: sleep, meals, water, movement and sunlight.
  • Limit the scroll. Mute accounts that make you feel worse about yourself.
  • Reach out. Talk to someone you trust, a counsellor, a faith leader or a doctor.

When it's urgent

If you or someone you know is thinking about self-harm or suicide, don't wait. Contact your local emergency number, go to the nearest hospital, or call a crisis helpline in your country right away. You don't have to be sure it's serious enough; asking for help is always the right call.

Looking fine and being fine are not the same thing. It's okay to not be okay, and it's brave to say so.

Today, check in on one person, and on yourself. That simple question, asked with real care, might be exactly what someone has been waiting to hear.

Stay silent at all cost!

✅ Be silent if you don't know the full story. ✅ Be silent if you feel unable to control your emotions. Silence isn't weakness. Often it is the strongest thing in the room.
