7 tips to buy cheap flight tickets. From booking on the right days to comparing nearby airports, here's how to save on your next trip, whether it's Nairobi to Mombasa or further afield.

Flying doesn't have to empty your wallet. Whether it's a quick hop from Nairobi to Mombasa, a weekend in Zanzibar or a trip to Kampala, a few smart habits can save you thousands of shillings on every ticket. Here are 7 tips to buy cheap flight tickets.

1. Book on Tuesdays & Wednesdays

Airlines often release deals early in the week, and midweek flights are usually cheaper than Fridays and Sundays, when most people travel. If your dates are flexible, check Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday departures first.

2. Book at the right time

Don't leave it to the last minute. For local and regional flights, booking three to six weeks ahead usually gets the best fares. For international trips, aim for two to four months. For holidays such as December and Easter, book even earlier, because prices climb fast.

3. Be flexible with dates and times

Use the flexible-date or calendar view on airline and comparison websites to see prices across a whole month. Early-morning and late-night flights are often much cheaper than midday ones.

4. Compare airports and routes

Check nearby airports and different routes. Sometimes flying into a different city and connecting by bus or train works out cheaper. A direct flight isn't always the cheapest; a short connection can save a lot.

5. Set price alerts

Comparison sites and airline apps let you set alerts for a route. You'll get a notification when the price drops, so you can book at the right moment instead of checking every day.

6. Sign up for airline deals and loyalty programmes

Airlines send their best promotions to newsletter subscribers and loyalty members first. Joining is free, and points from a few trips can add up to discounts or free upgrades.

7. Travel light and read the fine print

Low fares often exclude checked bags, seat selection and meals. Pack carry-on only when you can, and compare the total price, including bags and fees, before you book.

Bonus tips

  • Search in a private browser window so you can compare prices without distractions from previous searches.
  • Book directly with the airline once you've found the best price; changes and refunds are usually easier.
  • Pay in local currency where possible to avoid extra card conversion fees.
  • Check travel requirements early: passport validity, visas and vaccination certificates such as yellow fever.
The cheapest flight is the one you planned for. Book smart, travel light and spend the savings on the trip itself.
